I thought it was interesting how they portrayed his family in the film vs. the book. I wonder how much of what they put in the film was true. Such as his mother telling them to come watch while his father abused her. May've been more of a "docudrama"

"based on a true story", not actually true.

there is also no way someone with no experience and no helmet survived kayaking the grand canyon.

i haven't read the book. does it claim to be actually true?

yeah. the guy it's written by (krakauer) said it started with an article in some journal that commissioned him to write it and it evolved into a book because i think he was so fascinated by the story. he has interviews in the book with the people chris met on his journey, but some of them seem quite fictionalized. someone is actually quoted as saying "that there" in the way people usually say to mock southerners. i liked the book a lot more than the movie because it had more of a "this guy was a moron" aspect to it, while the movie kind of didn't. and he was. really.
i find it very hard to believe some of the things he is supposed to have done. it sounds a lot more like he told some people some stories he wished were true and nobody was with him at the time to refute his stories, so it's just assumed they were true.
run-on sentences..
