i have a novel (or not) idea. why not, instead of razing poppy fields and killing sharecroppers in afghanistan, buy the poppies out from under the drug dealers and use them to make legitimate, time tested, effective, and safe medicines. opiates have been a staple of western medicine for centuries, only falling out of favor in the wake of america's drug "war", to be replaced by more expensive, less effective and often just as addictive substitutes. the afghan peasants just want to make a living. lets provide a legitimate market for their crops. while we're at it, we could legalize heroin and give it free to addicts, thereby cutting off the market to the dealers and eliminating the incentive to create new users.
