last week i was in marana, heading for tucson. i turned left at an intersection where i should have turned right. as i made my u-turn, i came face to face with this sign:

las vegas

most of the pics i took here were inside the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton. they were shot with a disposeable camera and i'll post them after i develop it.

after my visit to the dam, i headed south on 93. i pulled off at a turnout where i had seen a trailhead on my way north. you may not be able to read the sign in the first photo, but it says "Mohave Lake 2.8m" i had a full gallon of water, so i went for it. i had finished half of my water and was already tired before i reached the lake (which is actually the colorado River at that point), but i went on anyway. remember that i had to repeat the whole trip uphill after i turned around. i had intended to go for a skinny dip when i got to the river, but i found a family there who had boated up from willow springs. nice folks, they gave me a bottle of Propel and replenished my water. as it turned out, i didn't need the extra water. a gallon would have been just enough, but boy was the hike back out murderous! fortunately the canyon was serpentine enough that there was frequent shade from the midday sun. i rested a lot, sprawling on my back on the sand at one point for about 15 minutes. early on the trip back up, i encountered a couple of ridiculously fit people on their way down. it was kind of nice to know that someone would find my comatose self if i didn't make it. fortunately there was no need for an air-evac.although part of the reason it was so difficult is the soft sand, i found my limit, and it is nowhere near what it used to be. i am out of shape and 40 pounds overweight. this will be dealt with pronto! i did manage to pick up everyone else's trash on my way out and arrived at my truck with a bulging bag of cans and bottles.

really really cheap art

ok, here's the deal. i have a lot of old paintings lying around from the eighties and nineties. there is nothing wrong with them. actually, i like some of them a lot. they are taking up space, however, and i am not interested in hanging them anywhere once i start showing my work again. consequently, they are going to end up rolled up in a corner somewhere waiting for posterity to kick in. that seems like a waste, so i am going to sell them off at cost, more or less. i figure the materials for an average painting cost me between 50 and 100 bucks, so if anyone wants one of these, i will roll it up and stick it in a tube and mail it to you, suitable for restretching, framing, or upholstering your ottoman with. any takers? if so, i'll post pics of the paintings with their itty bitty prices.

you might laugh, but

i think i want to go see madonna on this tour. she has been making some really interesting music and working with some quite talented people on her last couple of cds.

evolution 3, complete

this painting illustrates perfectly the inadequacies of digital photography. aside from the poor detail, the camera is unable to understand subtle color differences, making large areas appear to be the same which actually aren't. for the full effect, you'll have to wait until i get around to updating my website with my 35mm.

another moron has accidentally joined my friend of list. welcome to headake, although i doubt he's bright enough to even realize he can read this. this is why i don't use the auto-add function and also why i sometimes miss adding folks who actually read my journal.

as it happens, madonna is not playing phoenix, and the entire tour is sold out already. if you are into flash, however, her site is really nice. wish i could do something comparable on mine.
