lyrics to burning times:

in the cool of the evening they used to gather
'neath the stars in a meadow circled near an old oak tree
at the times appointed by the seasons of the earth
and the phases of the moon
in the center stood a woman
equal with the others and respected for her worth
one of the many we call witches
the healers and the teachers of the wisdom of the earth
and the people grew through the knowledge she gave them
herbs to heal their bodies
spells to make their spirits whole
can't you hear them chanting healing incantations
calling forth the wise ones
celebrating in dance and song

chorus:
isis, astarte, diana, hecate, demeter, kali, inana

there were those who came to power through domination
and they bonded in the worship of a dead man on a cross
they sought control of the common people
by demanding allegiance to the church of rome
and the pope declared an inquisition
it was a war against the women whose power they feared
in this holocaust against the nature people
nine million european women died
and the tale is told of those who by the hundreds
holding together chose their death in the sea
while chanting praises of the mother goddess
a refusal of betrayal
women were dying to be free

chorus

now the earth is a witch
and the men still burn her
stripping her down with mining and the poisons of their war
still to us, the earth is a healer
a teacher, a mother
a weaver of a web of life that keeps us all alive
she gives us the vision to see through the chaos
she gives us the courage
it is our will to survive

the goal of a terrorist is to control people through fear.

the bush administration is telling us over and over that we must be afraid of iraq, afraid of al quaeda, afraid afraid afraid.

javamaven1 pointed out the exceedingly large number of deaths claimed by the song i posted. i did some searching and found estimates ranging from 30,000 to 300,000 people killed during the 16th and 17th centuries. still a daunting number.

i decided to drop by and see my friend steve at solar culture tonight. i rang the bell, and he wasn't there, but joey burns from calexico answered. they were rehearsing there. i had just met him a few days ago, so he invited me in. what a blast! mariachi luz de luna were all there, i got to meet most of them, and i got to hear them play a bunch of new stuff and also some of my old favorites, including a fantastic rendition of el picador, which some of you know. ;) it was neat to see the interplay between joey and the violinists as he taught them new parts, and also to see the older trumpet player, ruben, teaching the younger one, jacob, and how quickly jacob picked it up. quite a magical evening! their new cd comes out in february.
