People keep talking about things that are joyful, they never talk about the state that makes things that way. Perhaps there is no way to define joy except through what happens because of it...

but...

Joy is a profound state, something sumblime. It is more than happiness, more than revelation, stronger than love. Joy is comprehending all those things, and much more, for a fleeting moment. Joy is goodness, truth, and comprehension. It is faith, comfort, and love. Joy is the opposite of sorrow and the partner of peace. Joy is... knowing.

She's a fine gal...no?

uh.....It's a great dish washing liquid? no?....

uh....a feeling that someone or something gives you that words can not describe....
like you children hugging you with this incredible look of pure innocence....

The way your significant other smiles at you and you have no clue what you did, but they love you...

The way you feel about yourself when you accomplishes something you didn't think you could....

butterflies in your tummy...;)

joy is the act of simultaneously letting go and holding on.

i think that's my favorite response yet. joy is different for everyone and every situation. your definition avoids pinning it down, but evokes memories of the feeling.

well, if joy can only come from beauty, i would say that beauty is anything which causes joy. or are there types of beauty which don't cause joy?

argument #13

joy is...

The feeling: wanting to throw your arms around the whole world and squeeze it.

The action: throwing your arms around the person or thing that carries the whole world inside it.

Recognizing that every person, every thing, carries the whole world inside it.

Joy simply is. What joy means to each person is different because different things bring out joy or consume it in bliss. Joy is freedom and acceptance and the knowledge that when the pieces fall, there will be a way to survive no matter what. That is giving yourself over to absolute freedom without intellecual or physical fetters.

do you think it is possible to experience joy without letting go? is it possible for joy to overwhelm you despite all efforts to remain stoic, or determination to remain unhappy?

joy....that all escaping, eluding thing we all seek and yet sometimes find, and yet others never truely find, even though they think they have...
it is pursuing your dreams, walking along life's paths and taking the right ones, but sometimes, taking the wrong path, just turn around, go back retrace your steps to where you truely wanted to be.....I am there, it is peace within your soul, peace with your friends and family...it is true heartful happiness that comes from within yourself....no one or nothing can give you joy, it comes from within, if you are happy and joyful within, you will radiate that to the world....
I am radiating to you right now
peace
and sweet hugs...

everytime i try to define joy
it escapes me..
i think it's cos you cant define it,
cos it is fleeting one moment
and enveloping the next..
it is a motion...
and to contain a motion is to damm it from it's natural flow...
for what makes you happy today, may make you miserable tomorrow..
eh
