At curriculum night, we set out activities for parents to try, so they could get a better idea of what their kids do during the school day.

Most of the parents went right to the paint and had a grand old time.

It's sad to me that, as adults, most people stop gravitating towards the things that kept them happy and entertained when they were kids. I love working with young kids because I have opportunities all the time to do things that I loved to do in my childhood, such as paint.

I think adults operate by an "expert" mentality... if you're not an expert, you shouldn't do it. I think that's why a lot of people shy away from writing, drawing, painting, etc. out of fear of not being good enough. Whatever that means.

I wonder how artists overcome that feeling. I know I struggle with it all the time.

for me, art is all about play. drop all preconceptions about what is "good", "artistic", "talented", or whatever, and just follow what comes naturally. anyone can learn to paint a landscape if they work at it enough. truly great landscape painters get there by playing.
