the lucky ones
jon sirkis

figured i'd write about my trip tonight
i'm in a village not far from where the fighting's been
everyone i've met's been really friendly
but there's something in the air and the people are scared
and the place is dead silent when a plane flies overhead
somebody said the fighting's getting closer

the army came to the village down the way
it was pretty bad this time they burned everything
that must've been the shots we heard last night
when they came through here - now it's only been a year -
they just stole some food and took a couple men away
compared to what i've heard they got off easy

but one girl then became one of the lucky ones
now when the shooting starts she never seems to hear
'cause the night the soldiers came is blocked out of her memory
for her it's just like nothing ever happens

gotta break the truth out of the silence, gotta fill the darkness up with light
so tell me how does sowing seeds of hatred help defend our way of life
do you wanna do something about it or would you rather never have to know
is there any spark left in your conscience
or have you become one of them - have you become one of them
have you become one of the lucky ones?

the gunships came around down today and they shot at our backs as we tried to run away
most of us made it across the river
there was nothing left to burn by the time we returned
but 23 people didn't make it out of there
the soldiers hung their bodies from the village square

but the lucky ones never have to think of that
or wonder when the next time's gonna be
or be a soldier with a conscience who must live his life
with the part he played in what just happened

gotta break the truth out of the silence, gotta fill the darkness up with light
so tell me how does sowing seeds of hatred help defend our way of life
do you wanna do something about it or would you rather never have to know
is there any spark left in your conscience
or have you become one of them - have you become one of them
have you become one of the lucky ones?

been a slow day on the news they say, not a word of the war the country or the villagers
even though our taxes buy the bullets
it ain't like they lied about the people who died
i guess they figured it just wasn't worth mentioning
cause that kinda stuff goes on there all the time

so i guess it's really we who are the lucky ones
when the shooting starts we never need to hear
or see the end results that our money buys
for us it's just like nothing ever happens

you don't need the talk of truth and justice to realize that something's just not right
so tell me how does sowing seeds of hatred help defend our way of life
do you wanna do something about it or would you rather never have to know
is there any spark left in your conscience
or have you become one of them - have you become one of them
have you become one of the lucky ones?

a few years ago jon decided he could never make a living as a musician (gee, i wonder why he never got airplay) and is now in law school.

you can still find his cds, Songs For Kelly and The Wild West online if you'd like to buy them.
