i saw this production of King Lear live in Central Park in the summer of 1974. it was the summer between my sophomore and junior years of high school. our whole family stood in a long line for hours to get free tickets. it was like a big picnic. everyone on line just hung out in the park for the afternoon. vendors went up and down the line, selling the usual sodas, hot dogs, pretzels... at one point these two people dressed completely in purple and riding purple bicycles came right up to me and handed me a piece of paper with what appeared to be a bunch of nonsense on it. as they handed it to me they said "this is for you since you aren't wearing leather shoes." later i discovered that hidden amidst all the weird collage on the pamplet were explicit directions on how to derive the phone card number from any phone number in the country. i used exxon's credit card to make a bunch of calls the next year from school. but that isn't the reason i posted. i posted to tell you that james earl jones (the voice of darth vader, among many greater accomplishments), was spectacular as king lear. and look at the rest of the cast! several familiar names, all at the beginnings of their careers. if i was working, i'd buy this video.
