Animals is not my favorite Pink Floyd album musically, but for lyrical content, i think it is head and shoulders above the rest. this was the album in which Roger Waters' vision took control of the band. his dark and frighteningly accurate allegory was there behind the space cadet glow of Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, but on this disc it became the driving force.

That's alway been my favorite of theirs. There are others that sound better, depending on what mood I'm in, but that's the one I that never leaves favor.

I almost bought Ummagumma a few weeks ago. (I ended up with a Gabriel record instead - the one where he's looking out the car window in the rain.) I'm slowly picking up all their albums. I do have the LP, though, but I don't have a turnatable. I do have them all if you count LPs.

gabriel's first. good choice. he was searching for a style with that album, casting about in a lot of different directions. the result is quite a diverse group of songs. then with his second effort (scratch), he narrowed it down to the Modern Love/Slowburn edgier guitar feel. this album contains two of my favorite gabriel songs, White Shadow and Mother of Violence. with his third album (melt), he made a complete departure. he came to a realization at that point that to change the music, you change the rhythm first (from a picture interview record). that one is all about the rhythm, musically. one of his problems with working in genesis, was the way they composed. he would write lyrics and the other guys would write music, and then they would try to make them work together. hence some of the creative phrasing of the early genesis albums. starting particularly with the third solo album, peter began to compose music and then put words to it. the difference is striking. he also began his close relationship with africa at this point.... want more? i can go on and on about this guy.

Tell me all you want. I'm into that sort of thing. And I don't know all that much about Gabriel anyway.
