Jimmy Carter gets the Nobel Peace Prize, and it couldn't have gone to a better person. There is no vote I am prouder of than my very first one, which was cast for him.

My first vote as well....and what other living former President has conducted himself more honorably? None!

I voted in the primary for Paul Simon, I think (wasn't that the election?). But voted for Carter in the main election. His honorable behavior is definitely one of his most outstanding qualities. I've grown to have immense respect for the man.

I respected him at a time when most people didn't. I think history will judge his presidency much better than people give him credit for now.

Like President Truman. Our last GREAT President, IMHO.

A bright ray of hope in a week when I have despaired at the dark forces in our country.

Oh yay :). I would have voted for him had I, well, even existed yet.

My first presidential vote was cast, with much apathy in the "lesser of two evils" sense, for the winner of the last election; too bad he isn't in the White House.

It sure was nice to win in '1976. *sigh*

In 1972, I was 16 and not old enough to vote, but I actively campaigned for George McGovern, passing out leaflets downtown St. Paul and working at the campaign headquarters in Minneapolis. I had a horrible sinking feeling that Nixon was going to win, but the night of the election I stayed up all night and just CRIED.

In 1980, I cried again when Reagan beat Carter. :`(

i was an avid supporter of bobby kennedy as a kid in 68. his death signalled the death of the american dream for me. carter seemed like a ray of hope, but a republican congress killed it.

Your parents must have taught you about Bobby Kennedy. You were only 10(?) in '68 but it sounds like you knew the true impact of his death even then. I was 12 and knew mostly from my older brother (then 17).

And it's definitely true what you said about Carter.

i was only ten, but i was already going door to door and picketing stores in support of the united farm workers, and had met cesar chavez. i had an activist childhood. bobby was a strong supporter of the UFW, so i knew a lot about him. i didn't realize the full impact of his death until later, but i was definitely affected by it.

i've been so out of touch with the news that i didn't even know he was nominated!

about a month ago, i was reading the american optometric association newsletter and came across his involvement with the world health organization (who). i recall wondering when he'd ever get recognition for all his worldwide humanitarian efforts. i'm glad the answer came by way of a nobel peace prize. i can't think of a more deserving (former) political leader.
